Downloading Drivers: Just DON’T do it!
Another infected machine just came through the shop. This one could have been easily avoided.
The infection was an identity theft bug. I just hope damage is not done by this one before the client brought it in.
Please heed this advice:
Never, Never, Never do a web search for a driver update for any hardware, ever. (Google is not your friend here)
Never, Never, Never trust any site that claims to be a “Driver Updater”, or anything of the kind.
These things are ways to install PUPs (Potentially Unwanted Programs) on your machine, frequently the install is just a foot in the door for far worse things to happen.
If you need a driver for a new device, obtain it directly from the manufacturer’s website, NEVER from a 3rd party website. Call us and we’ll talk you through it.
The best that can happen is that you get a machine that is really slow because it is all messed up with a relatively harmless infection.
The worst that can happen is that someone steals your identity, cleans out your bank accounts, and does an encrypted ransom thing on your computer so you must pay to get the data back.
Which one do you want? Hopefully, it is “none of the above”.
These things can be avoided by getting needed drivers from manufacturer’s websites. (HP printers from www.hp.com or Epson printers from www.epson.com – you get the picture). Please be careful, and do not be a sucker. Or, you can pay us for cleaning up the mess.
