How did I go from being a licensed midwife to a licensed funeral director and end of life doula? It started with pouring over my mom’s obstetrical nursing textbooks as a child, morphed into becoming a music history major, then birth doula. Doula work has always been in my blood and this naturally flowed into becoming a midwife. To bring life into the world is both joyful and challenging. It is ALWAYS an honour to be present when a baby takes the first breath. Birth is a significant life transition. Death is too, but one that many of us ignore until it demands our attention.

My journey into the end of life world began when an acquaintance of mine shared with me the story of her adult son’s sudden passing and her journey to find how to honour his body in a way that suited his love of nature. Through her story I began exploring the world of green burial options and end of life doula care. My first entry into the ‘doula’ realm in this area of life, took place when a dear friend lost her beautiful 5 year old grand baby in a tragic home accident. Being there emotionally and spiritually to mourn alongside her and remain within the close circle of friends to pray for their family touched me deeply. This experience shaped my calling to become a death doula.

I am a certified “Death & Resurrection” doula, which is the first and only Christian-based end of life doula training.

There is so much ignorance and fear surrounding death in our culture today. This transition doesn’t need to be walked alone, accompanied by chaos and fear. My heart is to be present and supportive in practical ways for those preparing to move into the final transition of their life here on earth, as well as provide hope for the one in the process of dying and the family they leave behind.
